Simple steps can save lives

- By Emma Hayley Rinaldi

ONE in eight women develops breast cancer. Survival chances are highest if it is detected in the early stages. This week No.1 magazine, our sister publication, brings you a guide to checking yourself for signs and symptoms.

Crucial advice

FOR over-50s, it is important to attend breast screening appointments where early signs of cancer can be spotted. And you should carry out regular self-checks to spot any changes or abnormalities as soon as they occur.

See anything unusual?

LOOK at yourself in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Check your breasts, armpits and up to your collarbone for changes. Raise your arms and check again.

Keep checking

NEXT, feel your breasts when lying down. Use a circular motion to check for abnormalities. The best time to do this is midway through your cycle, as breasts are often more sensitive before or during your period.

Other signs

YOU’RE not just looking for lumps. There are other tell-tale signs that you may have breast cancer, including a change in the shape or size of the nipple or breast; a puckering or orange peel effect; a redness or rash on the nipple; pain in the armpit and/or breast; and swelling in the armpit or collarbone.

Better safe than sorry

YOU should also keep in mind that most lumps aren’t cancerous, but it’s important to go to your GP as soon as you spot anything unusual to get checked out.
