Conquer your cravings

- By Emma Hayley Rinaldi

STUCK with a sweet tooth? Lost without your morning latte? Our sister publication No.1 magazine investigates what our cravings tell us about our health...

Chocoholics anonymous

UNFORTUNATELY, craving a sweet treat is not an indication that your body has a chocolate deficiency! It may mean you lack magnesium, a mineral vital for healthy skin. Try swapping your normal snack for a few pieces of dark chocolate, which contains less sugar and fewer calories.

Carbs overload

CAN’T stop thinking about bread, pasta, potatoes and whatever carb-filled meals you can get your hands on? It could mean you lack nitrogen in your diet. You’ll find it in high-protein foods such as meat, fish, nuts or beans. To kill off this craving try a turkey burger, or snack on a handful of nuts.

Glass act

IF you’re craving caffeine, your body could be dehydrated. Instead of a cappuccino or cola, try to make sure you’re getting the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day.

Sweet surrender

REACHING for the sweetie jar too often can be a sign of stress. To satisfy your sweet tooth, try frozen grapes or a few strawberries dipped in dark chocolate.

Dairy me!

IN constant need of milk, cheese, ice cream or pizza? This is probably your body’s way of telling you it needs calcium. Cheese and other dairy foods are a great source of calcium and vitamin D. Try taking some vitamin D tablets, then introduce more dairy into your diet.

Fond of fried food?

YOUR body may be crying out for healthy fats, especially if you’ve been trying to lose weight. Healthy fats found in things such as avocados and cashew nuts can help you lose excess fat.

Drink up...

RESEARCH shows 80% of people are chronically dehydrated. Rather than reaching for a quick fix, try drinking a pint of water and then waiting half an hour – the chances are that your craving will disappear.
