When The War Is Over
Barbara Fox, Sphere, £7.99
The poignant true story of wartime child evacuees Gwenda and Douglas Brady will have the reader smiling through tears.
In a book simply, but beautifully told, Fox explores their experiences far from home, the far-reaching tendrils of the tragedies of the Second World War, and life in its wake.
Packed with photos from the period, it’s a super read.
OUR VERDICT 8/10
Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide To British Birds
Bill Bailey, Quercus, £20
Crackling with energy and humour, stand-up comedian Bailey’s book is a celebration of his love of birds.
This guide is a visual feast of illustrations, notes and sketches by the author.
But above all it’s a funny, informative and insightful read which is sure to entertain.
OUR VERDICT 7/10
Marcus At Home Marcus Wareing, HarperCollins, £20
TV MasterChef judge Marcus Wareing is a culinary king.
But in this book he reveals his other side – the one he shares with family and friends when cooking at home.
I’m not sure that the exacting professional persona of Wareing translates well into this more relaxed form, but the book is beautifully presented and easy to follow.
