Should parliament decide on Brexit?

-

THE UK Government has lost a crucial Brexit ruling at the High Court meaning it can’t trigger Article 50 and begin the process of leaving the EU without first consulting MPs. We asked our Email Jury if Brexit should mean Brexit – or should there be a vote in Parliament to decide whether we stay or go? Also, is this a good result for Scotland?

Why have a referendum and then have to put it to the MPs? The vote was to Leave – there was nothing about this option when the public voted. Bea Smith, Doncaster.

Politicians seem to forget they work for us and the nation has instructed them to leave the EU. Lorraine Anderson, Edinburgh.

Parliament should have a say but MPs should not go against the people who voted Leave. Tom Anderson, Sussex.

There should be a vote as even Leave campaigners were surprised at the result of the referendum. Sandra Wisely, Skene.

We already had a vote. Are they going to keep voting until it is one they like? Joan Fordyce, Forfar.

I’m totally unsure and very confused. The future for all of us is extremely uncertain right now. Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire.

Brexit should mean Brexit. If there is a vote then the result should be final, otherwise every vote could be challenged. Mary Rae, Angus.

If the democratic vote is ignored, why do we have elections? All MPs should realise they are in parliament to carry out the wishes of constituents, not their party. James G. Plenderleith, Edinburgh.

The fact that Scotland voted to stay is irrelevant – it does not have a mandate to negotiate with Europe as a separate country as we are not one and hopefully never will be. Linda Kerr, Bishopbriggs.

Although Article 50 is extremely complex, this Tory Government under Mrs May must deliver Brexit. William Mclaughlin, Preston.

We have already had the vote and we chose to Leave. So let’s waste no more time and just go. Bill Bell, Nottingham.

Whatever each personal choice to either stay or go was, we can’t exist much longer in this state of flux. Let’s accept the original decision and work with it. Irene Thomson, Perth.
