There will be no splashing of Gers cash

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

RANGERS fans looking for their side to splash the cash on players in January seem set to be disappointed.

The Ibrox club made two marquee signings last summer in Joey Barton and Niko Kranjcar.

Barton looks unlikely to feature again following a training-ground bust-up and is training with the youth squad.

Meanwhile, Kranjcar is facing at least six months on the sidelines with a cruciate knee injury.

But big-name replacements look unlikely to arrive during the next transfer window.

Chairman Dave King previously promised an investment of between £30 and £50 million. But manager Mark Warburton is now talking about loan players coming from England.

He said: “It has to be good business for the club in the transfer market.

“Everyone is saying: ‘Is there money there?’. But January is notoriously difficult.

“Clubs that want to buy players are desperate and will pay over the odds.

“Clubs doing well don’t want to sell their best assets and they’ll charge twice the price.

“Where you lose players, then others come in. Jordan Rossiter showed his talent early on and he’s not far away now.

“We have options, but if we need to add, I’ll maybe look at a potential loan option in January.

“Are there players returning to a Premier League club that we could access? Possibly.”

Meanwhile, Warburton is the latest manager to make it clear he wants a goalkeeper to be good with the ball at his feet.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola replaced Joe Hart with Claudio Bravo because he felt the Chilean’s distribution was better.

Dorus de Vries arrived at Celtic with Brendan Rodgers praising his ability to be able to orchestrate the game from the back.

Although Matt Gilks made some outstanding saves against Celtic in the League Cup semi-final, Warburton is not tempted to give him the gloves ahead of Wes Foderingham.

He said: “Look at Wes and look at how we play. Supporters look at one aspect of the game. We as coaches and managers look at the all-round picture.

“But I don’t know what Wes has done wrong. Simple as that.”
