Joe pleads: ‘Don’t call me super sub’

- By Danny Stewart sport@sundaypost.com

JOE DODOO lapped up the applause yesterday after coming off the bench to fire Rangers to victory against Partick Thistle.

However while happy with his return of two goals – his first in the league – from just 34 minutes action, he insisted he didn’t want to be tagged “super sub”.

“It’s important for me not to be seen that way because it can become a regular thing,” he said.

“The manager said to be patient and my chance would come.

“I knew I had to keep working every day and be prepared, so when my opportunity came around I was ready to take it. I’m happy to say I did that.

“It was great to score and great to hear the fans chanting my name. It’s early days for me, though, I’ve still got a lot of work to do and I am looking forward to doing it.

“I was also happy because we needed the three points to climb up the table.

“Fair play to Kenny Miller for seeing both passes and executing them perfectly for me to finish.

“He has been a great influence. We are both alike, we like to win everything.

“It’s great for me having him here. He’s been here a long time and I’m learning things about how things go around.”

The Light Blues last night paid tribute to their former star Davie Provan who passed away following a long illness

The 75-year-old made more than 250 appearances for the club in a 12- year spell between 1958 and 1970, starring in the Treble-winning side of 1964.

Rangers managing director, Stewart Robertson, said on the club website: “On behalf of everyone at RFC I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Davie Provan’s family and friends.

“He was huge part of the club for decades and he enjoyed a terrific playing career here.

“Davie worked at Ibrox for a number of years as a matchday host and was also a vital part of John Greig’s backroom staff during his time as Rangers manager.”
