You owe us or we owe you?

THOMAS McFall, of Motherwell, has had terrible problems with his electricity meter.

It started when he moved in 20 years ago and removed the storage heaters in the house. ScottishPower investigated why his usage changed so drastically, and there have been problems ever since

Then he had problems with the meter settings being wrong.

In January of this year he was sent statements that, in turn, declared he owed £457 – and was £561 in credit. This was, understandably, confusing

Thomas is adamant that most of the problems came from not enough proper readings and too many estimates being made. He contacted Raw Deal. We had a word with ScottishPower.

It sent an apology to Thomas, saying: “Mr McFall was disputing his usage and why he was receiving estimated bills.

“He also had a problem with his meter which we exchanged in May 2016 with the same type of meter when it should have been a single-rate meter. Unfortunately when we updated the installation reading this was also wrong.

“The correct meter was installed in November and the account has been updated showing a balance of £666.64. We have agreed to withdraw this balance due to the time it has taken to resolve.

“By way of an apology we have credited a further £100 goodwill payment.”

Thomas thanked Raw Deal, saying: “I wasn’t getting anywhere until you got involved.”
