2017 IN THE STARS

- By Jane Ridder-Patrick

A LOOK BACK AT 2016

As predicted last year, ordinary people whose frustrations at having had their needs and concerns ignored for years protested against the existing systems of governance.

The results of this – as seen in the Brexit poll and the American election – sent shockwaves throughout the world, as did the eruption of hatred against marginalised and vulnerable groups.

On the other hand there has been widespread condemnation of such discrimination and people-power also showed up in the success of the peaceful environmental movement led by tribal elders at Standing Rock in Dakota to protect the water supply from oil contamination.

Of environmental significance too was the ratification of the Paris global climate agreement by both China and the US, who together are responsible for almost half of the world’s carbon emissions.

So, 2016, despite appearances, wasn’t all bad.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2017

Environmental issues will continue to be important in 2017.

As the recognition grows that what we do to others and to the earth, we do to ourselves too, it’s likely that more people will come forward to protect what’s endangered.

Saturn – associated with tradition as well as rules and regulations – and Uranus – linked with rebellion, innovation and democracy – are in a friendly aspect all year, bringing the possibility that some positive changes, new solutions and social justice can come about peacefully and constructively.

The 2017 eclipses should bring insights about what true leadership, democracy and compassion look like and with Saturn in Sagittarius until next December, regulations to deal with the fake news and distorted propaganda that plagued 2016 are set to become an issue.
