Three-year-old’s message for mountain rescue heroes
A TODDLER melted mountain rescuers’ hearts with an adorable thank- you card after they saved his mum’s life.
Three- year- old Brenin Harper came up with the sweet message after primary school teacher mum Wendy, 42, was plucked to safety.
The keen walker had been trapped on a remote ridge for five hours after suffering a leg injury.
She was eventually winched to safety by helicopter.
And young Brenin was so happy to see his mum again that he thanked the crew with a carefully hand-made present.
“These guys saved my life and let my three-year-old get his mummy home,” said Wendy, of Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire.
“Without them I would have died on the mountain.”
The wee boy’s drawing – which depicted the dramatic rescue and thanked the team for “bringing my mummy home alive” – delighted crew members.
A coastguard spokesman said: “When you meet people like Wendy and her lovely, smiling little boy,
you realise the value of our work. We were only too happy to turn out and rescue her.
“The crew were touched by Brenin spending time making his lovely tribute. “It really made their day.” Wendy was scaling Ben Cruachan near Oban, Argyll, when she fell, injuring her knee and ankle.
Unable to move, her core body temperature plunged.
“Within 30 minutes I could not speak,” she said.
“I was slipping in and out of consciousness even with my two jackets, three base layers, hat, hood gloves, a survival bag and blanket.”
Fortunately, Wendy was with a friend who was able to raise the alarm.
However, with darkness drawing in and Wendy struggling to stay awake, the rescue team struggled to locate them – until her walking buddy set off a flare, pinpointing their position.
“The coast guard crew are all-round heroes,” said Wendy.
“After the accident Brenin asked me to help him make a thank-you present for the crew.
“He spent an hour lovingly drawing the helicopter rescuing me and sprinkled it with glitter.”
Wendy and Brenin personally delivered the card to the crew’s base in Prestwick, Ayrshire.
“It was really special – we’re so pleased that they liked it,” added Wendy.
