England modernise while we stay in the dark ages
IT looks like the English second tier will begin using goal-line technology from next season.
So why on earth is the Scottish top flight still lagging behind?
Admittedly, the money swilling around the Championship is incredible. So introducing the system is a no-brainer for the EFL.
But even with the apparent “six figure” cost of installing the technology at each ground, surely the SPFL can come up with some way to get the job done in their flagship competition?
Currently, Celtic Park is the only ground in Scotland to possess a FIFA-certified goal decision system. It was installed last summer ahead of their Champions League qualifiers.
With the Championship now modernising, it’s time Scotland’s top flight did the same.
It’s not about keeping up appearances, although that can’t hurt. It’s about helping referees make the right calls – and that is something leagues around the world should be mindful of.
The Premier League has just lost its best referee in Mark Clattenburg (left), who has swapped England for Saudi Arabia because he felt refs were not being given the best backing possible.
If the SPFL don’t devote themselves to bringing in goal-line technology, they are at risk of losing their own top whistlers.
Not abroad, but to the game for good.
