Interior design of a house that’s steeped in tradition.

- By Murray Scougall

IF it’s a house steeped in character that’s of interest, look no further than 32 Church Place in the quaint Fife village of Upper Largo.

Dating back to the 18th Century, it was once the laundry residence for Largo House, the ruinous remains of which are just along the road.

And Alexander Selkirk, who provided inspiration for Robinson Crusoe, is buried in the nearby churchyard.

The current owners, Allan and Jennifer Cameron, have lived in the four-bedroom home for 10 years.

“We fell in love with the house when we first saw it,” Allan said.

“People who are looking for a bit of character in their house will like this place.

“It’s a traditional-looking house and we’ve tried to maintain that.

“We’ve always had older furniture and we’ve tried to keep that antique period, so we haven’t modernised to any great extent except for the kitchen.

“There was an extension on the house that was built in the ’60s which had a flat roof and breeze blocks – it was pretty hideous. We employed a local architect to build an extension that looked like the existing house and we even managed to source matching slates.”

Inside, the bright and spacious dining room opens to the sitting room and formal dining room. There is a living room with open fire and panel wall, and a luxury bathroom.

Upstairs is the master bedroom with en suite shower room, two bedrooms and a fourth room that is currently used as a study with fitted office furniture.

The upper rooms all enjoy

elevated views over the beautiful garden towards the Firth of Forth.

Allan continued: “When we moved in the garden was overgrown, but older people in the area told me it was originally a market garden. The soil is incredibly fertile and everything we plant grows twice the size you would expect.

“At the bottom of the garden is a sunhouse with a wood-burning stove. My son is a musician, so it was used as a music room and has a piano, drum kit, guitars and a couple of bed settees for when his friends stayed over.”

As well as giving access to the summerhouse, a decked seating area provides the garden’s best views of the Forth.

Allan and Jennifer have decided to move on in order to be closer to their kids, Janet and Peter.

“They live in Glasgow and we would like to be closer to them, so we’re looking for somewhere in that area,” he added.

The house is on the market through Pagan Osborne for offers over £360,000.
