Before La La Land, Oscar contender Emma Stone demonstrat­ed her star quality as Olive, a high-school misfit who embraces her new-found bad girl reputation.

This is a sharp teen comedy that even finds decent roles for grown-ups Thomas Haden Church, Lisa Kudrow and Patricia Clarkson.

There have been plenty of film adaptation­s of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, but this 1946 version is by far and away the best.

John Mills as orphaned Pip heads an impressive cast, with director David Lean creating the perfect atmosphere and setting.

Based on Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch, Quentin Tarantino’s surprising­ly low-key crime drama initially wrong-footed some fans who were expecting another Pulp Fiction, but now stands up as one of his best films.

A star-studded cast is led by Pam Grier.

Wild Tales

Film4, 9pm, Thursday

Damian Szifron directs this delicious Argentinia­n black comedy.

The characters in each of the six short stories are unrelated, but they are all linked by themes of revenge and betrayal.

These scenarios include a case of road rage on a deserted highway and a hit and run that becomes a diabolical blame game.

Defence attorney Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughe­y) hits the jackpot when bail bondsman Val Valenzuela (John Leguizamo) recommends him as counsel for a playboy estate agent accused of attempted murder.
