Does anyone know the whereabouts of Rose?

GUNTER DEMNIG is an artist from Berlin.

Twenty years ago, he was invited by the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Service to install a marker outside the childhood home of brothers Matthias and Johann Nobis, honouring two victims of the Nazi regime.

These memorials were called Stolpersteine – cobblestonesized brass plaques fastened to pavements outside buildings where Nazi victims once lived or worked, ensuring they are never forgotten.

Since those first two Stolpersteine, there have been more than 56,000 laid in 22 European countries.

Susanne Woodin, who lives in Kent, came to know about the memorial markers when she was contacted by Sigrun and Wolfgang Marks.

They are volunteers with the Friedenau Stolperstein group, which donates hours of time to researching and commemorating victims from that area of Berlin.

Sigrun and Wolfgang were moved to set it up after discovering at least seven former residents of their apartment complex were victims of the Nazis.

When the members plan a ceremony they attempt to trace living relatives – and that is how Susanne learned of the project.

She was a child refugee from Berlin and was invited back to the site of her former home for the laying ceremony.

Susanne’s daughters travelled with her and all found it a very moving occasion as they connected with their heritage.

So when Sigrun, a retired teacher of politics and history, was trying to find information on someone believed to live in the UK, Susanne felt compelled to offer her assistance.

A Stolpersteine ceremony will take place in Berlin on March 21 in memory of Moritz and Rosalie Pfeil, who were deported and murdered in Chelmno, Poland, in 1942.

Their son escaped to Scotland three years earlier and lived in Glasgow, where he had a daughter, Rose Deborah.

She married at the city’s Park Circus in 1982 and has two children and possibly a sibling.

Despite Sigrun and Susanne contacting the Electoral Registration office and Mitchell Library in Glasgow, they have been unable to uncover any more information.

They would love Rose to be able to attend the ceremony, so anyone with information on her should contact mscougall@ sundaypost.com and the details will be passed on to Sigrun.
