LEAGUE 1 ROUND-UP

-

FLEETWOOD’S incredible season shows no signs of slowing down as they moved into the top two with a superb 2-0 win at Scunthorpe.

Devante Cole opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a simple tap in, and ex-Iron Bobby Grant sealed the points in the final minute.

The victory stretched Fleetwood’s unbeaten run to 18 games, but Scunthorpe’s own promotion hopes continue to falter after seven without a win.

The home side paid the price for not taking some first-half chances.

Debutant Matt Crooks saw a header brilliantly tipped over at full stretch by Fleetwood keeper Alex Cairns, who then denied Kevin van Veen.

Cole’s strike close to the interval gave Fleetwood the edge and left Scunthorpe under pressure in the second half. As they chased an equaliser, van Veen was just a whisker away with an effort that flashed inches wide of the far post.

They did have the ball in the back of the net after 64 minutes when Paddy Madden headed down for skipper Stephen Dawson to score with an overhead kick, only to be flagged offside.

Scunthorpe could not break down a stubborn Fleetwood defence and Grant was then left unmarked as he burst into the box to steer a low left foot shot into the bottom corner to wrap up victory.

Tom Elliott’s 13th goal of the season proved unlucky for Bolton, denying the Trotters a league double and securing AFC Wimbledon a deserved 1-1 draw at the Macron Stadium.

Striker Gary Madine, back after a two-game illness absence, headed home his ninth goal of the campaign after 14 minutes to put Wanderers in front, before Elliott struck for the Wombles.
