Restaurant REVIEW

THE WINE PRESS, DUNDEE

-

1 LOCATION

Sits in a great location, nestling between the city centre and Dundee’s waterfront, which seems to change a bit every time you pass it.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Hmm. A wine bar. Will this really be “us”? No worries. It’s a Saturday afternoon and it’s packed. We get a big smile from a member of staff who’s walking past.

3 SERVICE

It’s packed and there are people standing at the bar, plus others who have been in for a while asking them to order another bottle of wine for them. The staff take it all in their stride.

4 MENU

It’s not as extensive as a full-on restaurant. We’re in a wine bar, remember. But if you enjoy “picky” food like sharing platters, pies and toasties, then you’ll love it here.

5 TASTE

Ever been out for a drink in a crowd and you want something to eat but nothing too heavy? The platters are perfect for that, with cheese, a selection of cold meat, oatcakes and bread. The Scotch eggs were great, too.

6 PRICE

It’s not everyday prices. We’ve had one or two glasses of Prosecco so don’t pay that much attention when it comes to the bill. The morning after, in the cold light of day, more than a fiver for a macaroni pie is steep.

7 AMBIENCE

Just how a weekend jaunt should be. Friendly, lively and a great buzz – but we’re able to hear our conversation without any problem.

8 SOMETHING SPECIAL

Well, if you like wine, you’ll love it here. They even do tasters, so you can try before you buy. There’s also a fancy wine vending machine. For us, though, it’s all about the atmosphere – it’s a favourite haunt with Saturday afternoon shoppers and women having a girly day out.

9 TOILETS

Downstairs. Clean. But we don’t see any disabled access.

10 VERDICT

We found it a little dearer than we’d normally pay. Great for a visit, though – a bit different.
