1977 FROZEN IN TIME

-

GOALKEEPERS normally can’t lose when it comes to penalties.

They become the hero by saving one, but everyone expects the kicker to score.

It was a bit different for Dundee United legend Hamish McAlpine on March 26, 1977.

His run as the club’s penalty taker came to an end with a double disaster from the spot at Parkhead.

United were drawing 0-0 with Celtic when McAlpine had his penalty kick saved by opposite number Roy Baines.

That was bad enough, but the keeper then fouled Celtic’s Johnny Doyle to concede a penalty.

Ronnie Glavin stepped up to show how a kick from 12 yards should be taken.

McAlpine then concentrated on keeping the ball out of the net.
