OUR VERDICT 8/10 The Raqqa Diaries: Escape From Islamic State

Samer, Hutchison, £9.99

This young anti-IS activist risked his life to report what was happening in his home of Raqqa, the capital of IS’s self-proclaimed caliphate in Eastern Syria.

His diaries first came to light on Radio 4’s Today programme.

They include beheadings and the death of his father. Brutal but necessary reading.
