THE Diawl Bach has lots of variations, but this one, the Blue Diawl Bach, may seem a bit over the top to some. However, the trout don’t mind it one wee bit.

The hook is a Size-12 Kamasan B175 and the tying thread is black UTC 70. The tail is kingfisherblue cock fibres and the body peacock herl, ribbed with silver oval tinsel.

Finish the pattern with a beard hackle of kingfisher-blue hen fibres.

LAST week some good catches and individual fish came off at the Woodburn Fishery, near Milton of Campsie, with the Okey Dokey, White Fritz, Bloodworm and Buzzers all doing well.

John O’Riley from Glasgow had three for 8lb 8oz and returned seven, Alex O’Rourke (Drumchapel), three on C&R – largest 12lb, Donald Stewart (Lenzie) 10 on C&R and Dougie McCallum from Balloch took three for 10lb.

THE brown trout season started in spectacular style at the Swanswater Fishery, near Stirling, with a monster at 8lb 2oz caught on the opening day by Jim Spiers, from Falkirk.

Tam Baillie (Kincardine) took three for 8lb – including a 3lb 8oz brown – the first of the season.
