LEAGUE 2 ROUND-UP

-

CARLISLE ended a seven-match winless league run with a 2-0 win at Yeovil and re-ignite their play-off hopes.

John O’Sullivan lifted the Cumbrians into an early advantage, while Reggie Lambe struck after the interval to ensure a miserable afternoon for the Glovers in which their midfielder Ben Whitfield was also shown a straight red card.

O’Sullivan broke a goal drought for Carlisle that had stretched to 701 minutes at the point he found the net in the 16th minute, heading a quickly-taken Danny Grainger free-kick past Artur Krysiak.

The hosts struggled to respond, not creating any chances of note until just before half-time when Tom Eaves nodded a cross just wide.

Yeovil’s task was made even harder after 53 minutes when Whitfield appeared to elbow Tom Miller and referee Trevor Kettle sent off the loanee.

Carlisle wasted no time in making their one-man advantage count as Lambe’s effort was saved by Artur Krysiak, but he turned it in at the second attempt.

There was heartache for Blackpool as they were denied a point at Luton as Ollie Palmer struck in the last minute at Kenilworth Road to hand the Hatters a 1-0 success.

Hartlepool’s survival hopes took a knock as they succumbed 2-0 to high-flying Portsmouth, with Kal Naismith and Gary Roberts on target for Pompey.

Morecambe are still not totally safe either and had Alex Kenyon sent off as they lost 3-1 at Cheltenham.

After Michael Rose missed a penalty, Harry Pell struck either side of Danny Wright’s spot-kick to put the Robins 3-0 up, before Will Boyle’s own goal gave the Shrimps something to celebrate.
