Sleep boosts your beauty

- By Rosie O’Neill

WE all know that a lack of shut-eye leaves you feeling lethargic. But there’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep – resting properly is crucial to your routine. Our sister publication, No. 1 magazine, explains why.

Rest well, look young

A CLINICAL trial by the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Ohio revealed that a lack of sleep accelerated signs of skin ageing. People who had fewer than five hours’ sleep were twice as likely to have fine lines, uneven pigmentation, slackening of skin and reduced elasticity. Their skin also showed a 30% greater rate of dehydration. Poor sleepers tended to show a much slower recovery from sunburn than well-rested folk.

Pillow talk

A RECENT survey revealed that only a third of people changed their bed sheets on a weekly basis. However, your pillowcase carries all the dirt and product from your hair, as well as dust mites, which continues to accumulate the longer your bedding goes unwashed. Aim to wash your pillowcases (if not your full bedding!) at least once a week, or more if you suffer from skin breakouts.

Lip tips

APPLY a layer of lip balm and gently rub a soft toothbrush (don’t use the same one as you do for your teeth) across the surface of your lips to exfoliate. Wipe clean and re-apply the balm.

‘Eat’ more water

HOWARD MURAD, founder of skincare brand, Murad Inc, recommends we “eat” our water rather than drink it. He says: “If you replace at least one glass of water a day with one serving of raw fruits or vegetables which contain structured water, it will stay in your system longer meaning you will be able to stay hydrated significantly longer.” Food types that contain structured water and high levels of nutrients include cucumber, broccoli, pomegranates and avocados.

Back to front...

SLEEPING on your front isn’t good for your spine or your skin. Lying on your front causes the blood vessels under your eyes to become constricted and encourages fluid to gather. This can result in unsightly puffiness. Meanwhile, lying on your side increases pressure on the skin which can eventually lead to wrinkles. Sleeping on your back is best for your skin.
