Love is in the air for Sophie and Matthew, aged six

- By Tracey Bryce trbryce@sundaypost.com

SOPHIE Perrie and Matthew Gibson have been friends for as long as they can remember.

The pair have been inseperable since meeting at nursery school.

Living in the same town in Ayrshire, going to the same school – and having mums who are also friends – means they’ve grown up together and seen each other almost every day.

The duo claim they’re the perfect match and, as young kids with wild imaginations do, have been planning their wedding for quite some time.

So when Matthew, six, discovered the love of his life was moving 20 miles away to Eaglesham, he was devastated to say the least. Before his school sweetheart departed for pastures new, he wanted to do something special, so suggested they have a day out just the two of them, with mums in tow, and let Sophie decide where she wanted to go.

Her choice was a meal, so the pair set a date and went all out for their farewell party.

Matthew persuaded his mum to buy a new outfit for the occasion and wore smart trousers and a waistcoat and Sophie picked out her prettiest party dress.

In spite of his young years, P2 pupil Matthew proved the perfect gentleman, arriving with a bouquet of blooms for his date, pulling out her chair and taking her coat. Who knew a six-year-old could be so romantic?

They spent the evening chatting and colouring in.

And when five-year-old Sophie said she wanted to “dance til midnight”, Matthew took her hand and asked her for a dance outside the restaurant before the young couple headed home.

It wasn’t quite midnight (that’s way past their bedtime of course!) but they were allowed, for one night only, to stay out a little late.

Matthew was minding his manners so much that he even thanked Sophie’s father afterwards for letting him take her out.

With Sophie now settled in her new home, the pair worry they might not see each other again.

But mums Julie and Fiona have vowed to ensure they all stay in touch.

Afterall, they’ll need to have a day out at the shops to get the mums’ hats for their big day!

Sophie and Matthew are certainly proof you’re never too young to fall in love – or make friends that will last a lifetime.
