Young ‘uns trailing in battle of castaways

-

The Island wITh Bear Grylls, Channel 4

It’s back. The programme that sees a group of ordinary people dumped on an island in the middle of nowhere – usually with little in the way of survival skills. You can’t help but tune in to see how it all ends.

Of course, like me you probably sit smugly on your sofa with your heating on, a brew and a box of choccy biccies to nibble on, shouting at the telly that you could do far better – but, if marooned in the middle of the Pacific with nothing but a change of clothes, would you really? I mean, they don’t even get a box of matches!

The setting, with its white sands and crystal-clear waters, looks idyllic but sourcing your own food while trying not to get eaten by a killer croc ... it’s not my idea of a summer holiday!

This time, it’s a battle of the ages. The students want to prove their worth despite their lack of life experience, but the golden oldies have decades more maturity under their belt.

I secretly had my fingers crossed for the young ones – but sadly they didn’t prevail. By the end of their first day, they had no fire, water or shelter.

In contrast, the older group had a camp fire, beds and were fully hydrated with bellies full of coconut. The oldest of the bunch, 66-year-old Frank, is the perfect example that age is no barrier to success. All you need is some get up and go. Imagine he’ll show the youngsters a thing or two in weeks to come.

PeTer Kay’s Car share, BBC 1

It’s the longest-lasting love story in history. And fine-tuned comedy at its best. If only everyone’s commute was as much fun!

I only hope John and Kayleigh get together soon – but then again, that might spell an end to this brilliant series.
