Shameful scenes at Old Firm tie
UGLY scenes marred yesterday’s Old Firm game, including racist gestures and angry fans confronting players on the pitch.
The shameful scenes shocked football fans watching the famous derby match and prompted eight arrests by police.
A spectator in the Rangers end was captured by TV cameras making racist “monkey” gestures towards Celtic star Scott Sinclair after he scored a penalty at Ibrox to put the visitors one up.
Police were last night continuing inquiries into that incident.
Moments later another Rangers fan was involved in a clash with Celtic stars Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths after he invaded the pitch to seemingly confront the players.
Referee John Beaton was forced intervene.
After the match Celtic striker Griffiths said: “It’s not nice to see, obviously, but we just wanted to concentrate on our football.”
Police say a 23-yearold has been arrested in connection with the incident and will appear in court on Tuesday.
In another flashpoint some Rangers fans were spotted throwing objects at Celtic players.
Leigh Griffiths held up what appeared to be a battery to the referee, which apparently came from the stands, as the Bhoys players celebrated going 4-0 up.
The game finished 5-1 to Celtic.
In total eight fans were arrested for a host of offences, with two detained overnight.
Last night, a spokesman for Rangers FC said: “Rangers does not condone any form of unacceptable behaviour and the matter is now in the hands of Police Scotland.”
