Beerman gets Malta call-up

- By Mark Walker sport@sundaypost.com

MALTA boss Pietro Ghedin has praised Rangers starlet Myles Beerman after calling him up to his squad for the first time.

The 18-year-old full back has impressed after making it into the first-team under Pedro Caixinha.

And he has caught the eye of Malta’s Italian boss Ghedin, who has included him in his squad for their double-header friendly against Ukraine and World Cup qualifier in Scotland’s group against Slovenia in June.

Ghedin admits he has been impressed by the young defender’s displays.

He said: “Everyone deserves a chance at the national team and I have picked some young players for the squad.

“Myles deserves his opportunity. He is playing with a big club and the young players like him can be the future of Malta.

“It will take patience of course as these kids don’t have the experience at international level yet.

“But I firmly believe we will have the makings of a good team in a year or so’s time.”

RONNY DEILA has admitted not landing a move abroad as a player severely hindered him as Celtic boss.

The Valerenga boss left the Hoops a year ago after two seasons on Glasgow, which yielded two titles in Scotland.

Deila had a modest playing career, and never won a move away from Norway.

And he reckons that had a major impact on his time as Parkhead manager.

He said: “I would have probably done a better job at Celtic if I had been a professional abroad.

“If I had known the culture, I would have known about the standard of play and the football being played in a different way.

“It was a disadvantage for me that I had not been there before.

“The first three months at Celtic, when we were knocked out of the Champions League twice, was the worst situation I’ve ever been in.

“Experience and understanding of football is 30% of the job. The rest is about leadership and psychology.

“I would have probably done a better job in Celtic if I had been a professional player.”
