Devlin slams support after hail of abuse

HAMILTON ACCIES captain Mikey Devlin slammed supporters who barracked the players after their 1-0 defeat by Motherwell.

The defender had a heated exchange with a fan as he left the field.

He was particularly angry that his family had to hear the abuse being shouted in his direction. Now the 23-year-old wants everyone at Accies to be right behind them in their last two league matches. He said: “It’s difficult when you hear that abuse being shouted and especially when you have family in amongst it. “As frustrated as the fans are, they need to understand that we’re giving everything we possibly can on the pitch. “We don’t want to be losing, we don’t want to lose a derby, it means as much to us as it does to anyone else. “It’s our livelihood and If we get relegated it affects us too. “Emotionally, your head’s all over the place after a game but I don’t think we deserved some of the stuff we got coming off the pitch. “My dad was here with my mum, and my sister had travelled up from London. “She doesn’t get to many games and she’s hearing that abuse directed at her brother. That’s not good enough. “I’m sorry, but I give everything I can for this club, day to day and week to week. “I certainly don’t deserve that and the other players don’t deserve it. I’m not going to accept that as the cap- tain of this club. “I understand fans are frustrated but it’s not good enough.” Accies now occupy the relegation play-off spot and are three points behind Motherwell. They travel to Ross County on Tuesday and host Dundee on Saturday. Devlin believes they desperately need the support of their fans and defended boss Martin Canning. He went on: “It’s not in our hands now but we need to get six points and see where it leaves us. “I understand the fans’ frustration and I can understand they’re not happy being down near the bottom of the league for vast majority of the season. “But we need their support. We’re a small club and we don’t have thousands of fans coming to every game. “We need the experience and quality we have in the dressing room and we need the support as well. “All I can ask is that they stay behind the team and manager. “At the end of the day, the players have lost the game, not the manager.”
