Boost for boxer’s statue bid
HE’S the boxing legend who remains the only living British fighter to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Now efforts to create a permanent tribute to Ken Buchanan in his home city of Edinburgh have received a boost.
Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has accepted an invitation to be a patron of the foundation set-up by Buchanan’s lifelong friend Owen Smith to immortalise the lightweight legend with a statue.
Buchanan, now 71, was an undisputed world lightweight champion and is regarded as the greatest Scottish boxer of all time.
Welsh described him as a “dazzling” fighter with “offthe-scale determination”.
