MY favourite moment of the One Love Manchester concert came when Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande teamed up to cover Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over. What’s the story behind the song? – L.
Drawing inspiration from The Beatles, Neil Finn wrote his group’s biggest hit on his brother Tim’s piano.
Such songcraft, with its sophisticated hooks and harmonies, seemed out of sync in a mid-80s music scene dominated by Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s lavish productions. Maybe that’s why such a bona fide classic failed to trouble the UK Top 20 – although it did climb to No 2 in the US.
Ariana and pal Miley actually performed the song for the first time two years ago to raise awareness for the latter’s Happy Hippie Foundation.
And they won New Zealander Finn’s seal of approval.
He said: “What a life that song has had. I’m happy to see them enjoying it so much.”
