Sir David’s battle for colour TV

-

SIR David Attenborough has revealed his battle to bring colour television into the nation’s homes almost 50 years ago.

The national treasure – who was controller of BBC2 between 1965 and 1969 – was tasked with bringing colour to the “hipper BBC channel”.

He said: “The reputation of colour TV among newspaper critics wasn’t great.

“Part of my job was to convince them that the colour pictures we could produce were better than anything you’d seen in print.”

The 1967 Wimbledon Championships became the first ever colour broadcast, with Attenborough insisting critics marvelled at the new technology.
