Mysterious Scotland celebrated

-

THEY have been the focus of myth and legend for thousands of years.

Now the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, Callanish Standing Stones on Lewis and Kilmartin Glen at Kintyre have made it on to a list of 12 of Britain’s most mysterious ancient sites.

They took fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively, in a chart by top travel guide Wanderlust that was inevitably topped by Stonehenge.

Wanderlust said Callanish – which dates back to around 3000BC – was “one of the most unique prehistoric stone monuments in Scotland.”

Kilmartin Glen, meanwhile, was described as “exceptional” and “mainland Scotland’s premier prehistoric site”.
