Fergie set for playing return with Spiders?

SIR ALEX FERGUSON could soon be pulling his boots back on.

The legendary former Aberdeen and Manchester United manager is one of a number of Queen’s Park old boys who have been approached to play in a tournament to mark the clubs 150th birthday next month.

Before his managerial fame, Fergie was a striker with the Spiders, and also played with St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United, scoring 171 goals in 371 appearances.

Now 75, he has been contacted by the Hampden club, to turn out on Saturday, July 8, to compete in either a standard football competition or a walking football event.

The SFA’s performance director Malky Mackay, who went on to play for Celtic, Norwich City, West Ham and Watford, is also on their wanted list.

Tournament organiser Keith McAllister said: “Lots of former players went on to great things in football, and we have even more former players who gave great service to the game at more modest levels.

“We would like as many of them as possible to come along to help us celebrate our special anniversary by donning our famous black-and-white hoops again.”

Any ex-Spiders wanting to take part are asked to contact Keith by email at hampdenfan@yahoo.co.uk

GARY NAYSMITH has told striker Derek Lyle to enjoy his Testimonial match against a team of Rangers Legends at Palmerston today – but to use the game to get ready to lead the Doonhamers’ attack this season.

The 36-year-old has been rewarded for scoring 109 times for Queen of the South – in three separate stints – with a meeting against some of his heroes, including Andy Goram, Barry Ferguson, Lee McCulloch and Billy Dodds today.

However, his manager reckons there is still more to come from Lyle.

Naysmith said: “Hopefully, the fans will turn up to give Derek the day that he deserves. He is a fantastic goalscorer, who possesses an ability that you cannot coach.

“We have told him that he will get Monday off if he plays at least 80 minutes for us in his Testimonial.

“And he may try to play the final 10 minutes in a Rangers strip!”
