Captain Terry can’t stop Villa losing at Shrewsbury

-

JOHN TERRY has been confirmed as the new captain of Aston Villa.

The 36- year- old former England and Chelsea skipper takes the armband from James Chester, and wore it for the first time yesterday in a friendly at Shrewsbury, which Villa lost 2-1.

Villa said in a tweet: “John Terry confirmed as captain - and will wear the armband for the first time today against @ShrewsWeb.”

Terry joined the Championship club earlier this month, signing a oneyear deal with Steve Bruce’s team.

The announcement of his signing, via a mocked- up WhatsApp chat featuring owner Dr Tony Xia, included the phrase “Captain. Leader. VILLAN” – playing on Chelsea fans’ description of Terry as “Captain, Leader, Legend”.

ENGLAND won the European Under- 19 Championship title for the first time in their history after beating Portugal 2-1 in Georgia.

AstonVilla defender Easah Suliman headed the Young Lions in front early in the second half after a free-kick Mason Mount had hit the post.

A sliced own- goal from Chelsea right- back Dujon Sterling saw Portugal level before the hour.

Keith Downing’s side, though, secured a memorable victory when Manchester City forward Lukas Nmecha swept in after 68 minutes following a powerful run from Mount down the right.

SUNDERLAND and St Johnstone supporters were united as they paid respects to Bradley Lowery during the sixth minute of yesterday’s friendly at McDiarmid Park.

Bradley lost his cancer battle last week and the six-year-old’s funeral was held in his home village of Blackhall, County Durham, on Friday, where thousands of people wearing football shirts had lined the streets.

The memorial service was attended by his ‘best friend’ Jermain Defoe, the former Sunderland striker now at Bournemouth, who wore an England shirt.

The youngster’s brave battle against a rare childhood cancer captured hearts across the world.

On Friday night, Newcastle fans sang ‘ There’s only one Bradley Lowery’ during their friendly at Tynecastle.
