Queen makes surprise visit to Aboyne games

-

THE QUEEN yesterday popped in to the Aboyne Highland Games in Aberdeenshire.

Her Majesty officially opened the games, which is marking its 150 th anniversary.

Thousands of spectators looked on as the Queen dedicated a new caber, specially commissioned to mark the anniversary.

The monarch is thought to be in residence at nearby Balmoral, the Royal Family’s Scottish holiday home.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles went walkabout at the Mey Highland Games in Caithness.

The Duke of Rothesay spent half an hour walking round the arena at John O’Groats visiting stalls and meeting dozens of members of the public. It was a break with normal Royal protocol for the Prince who always goes to the gathering while on his annual week- long holiday at the Castle of Mey.

And no one was more excited about the walkabout than 73-year -old Elizabeth Price from Wrexham.

She was so delighted to meet the Prince that she grabbed his hand with both of hers. She said to the heir to the throne: “My, your hand is cold”. Prince Charles replied: “cold hands but a warm heart”

HRH smiled at her but Elizabeth, who is on holiday with her Caithness born husband, Raymond, was embarrassed about smiling back because she had lost a crown and had not been able to get to a dentist.
