It’s Morelos at the double for Gers but Pedro wants more

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

RANGERS boss Pedro Caixinha believes Alfredo Morelos will become an even greater goal threat when his English improves.

The Colombian striker got a double for the Ibrox men against Dundee, taking his tally to seven in the last five games.

If you include the time he spent in Finland earlier this year, the 21-yearold has hit the net 18 times in 17 matches.

Rangers’ fans have been desperate for a run of victories to keep in touch with the top of the table and Morelos will certainly help their chances if he maintains this form.

Ca ixin has topped short of predicting his £ 1 million man can score 25 to 30 goals this term, but feels the player has the ambition to rack up an impressive total.

He said: “It’s early in the season but I know that he wants to keep scoring.

“He’s still a young boy but we are working with him and he is very keen to learn. He always listens to us.

“He is a goal-scorer – his record in Finland shows that – but we want more from him.

“His English is getting better and that helps him to understand the others in the team.

“I can speak Spanish, so it’s easy for me to let him understand what we want.

“He has the tools to be a top player. We just have to give him time to learn and build his confidence.”

His manager might be looking for more, but the supporters already love what they see.

A persistent problem for Rangers has been capitalising on long periods of possession.

Morelos, on this form, will be a great help in turning games that might have been drawn into victories.

He really comes alive in the penalty area and the way he opened the scoring showed what he’s all about.

Rangers had dominated the firsthalf possession and Niko Kranjcar had passed up a couple of good opportunities.

Morelos struck just before the break when he thumped the ball home after a cute flick from Candeias.

His second came with five minutes to go.

The youngster skipped past Holt and shot past Bain at the near post.

It was a goal that will disappoint the goalie but showed a striker who’s hungry to hit the net.

Josh Windass returned from injury as a substitute and headed Rangers’ third from a pinpoint Candeias cross.

The Englishman was full of praise for Morelos.

He said: “He’s class. The ball always seems to fall to him at the right time and he always seems to put it away. That’s the sign of a quality striker.

“Can he score 30? Well, he’s got seven in five so why not?”

Another plus point for Rangers was seeing Mexican Carlos Pena get off the mark.

He appeared as a substitute for the out- of- touch Kenny Miller and delivered a cool finish with his left foot near the end.

His team- mates were clearly delighted to see him take the applause of the crowd.

Dundee got a late consolation from El Bakhtaoui but never looked like taking anything from the game.

It could have been different if Deacon had scored with a free header just seconds after the second half kicked off.

Dark Blues’ boss Neil McCann isn’t concerned that his team have only one point from five matches and sit bottom of the Premiership.

He said: “I’m not concerned about where we are in the league but that’s not to say I’m happy about it. I’m far from happy about it.

“It’s a sore lesson but we’ll dust ourselves down. I’m not panicking.

“The Dundee fans might be unhappy, but I’m not in this for five games this time. I’m in it for the long haul. “And I’ll get it right.” Scott Allan didn’t look impressed at being replaced during the first half, but McCann claimed he was injured.

He said: “I had to take Scott off because he was labouring a bit. He’s been struggling with an injury to his groin and didn’t train for a couple of days this week.”
