John Robertson was delighted to see his under-fire Caley Jags avoid a shock by seeing off League Two Peterhead 3-0 in the third round of the IRN-BRU Cup.

Goals from Liam Polworth, Riccardo Calder and Daniel Mackay put the Championship strugglers into Tuesday’s quarter-final draw.

The home manager was delighted overall, but especially for 16-year-old Mackay for putting the icing on the cake in this tie.

He said: “Young Daniel came on with a couple of minutes to go and had two fantastic chances and sometimes that is all you need. He is honest and direct and he got his goal and it lifted the whole dressing room. It was a really good story to finish the day.”

Robertson’s team could not have wished for a better start as midfielder Liam Polworth collected the ball and unleashed a stinging shot which, with the aid of a deflection, beat keeper Greg Fleming to nestle in the net.

Rory McAllister and Jamie Stevenson were not far off with efforts as the visitors soon settled.

However, Caley Thistle all but sealed their spot in the last eight, six minutes after the interval when Calder played a one-two with Polworth before coolly slotting home from close range.

And the scoring ended in stoppage time when Mackay, moments after stepping on the pitch, guided the ball into the net after fellow sub George Oakley’s shot was saved by Fleming.

Queen of the South were pushed every inch of the way by the League Two side.

Montrose made a fast start and should have scored in three minutes. A shot from Terry Masson was pushed out by Alan Martin and Connor McLaren put the rebound wide.

In 21 minutes, home keeper Allan Fleming made the first of a string of great saves when he kept out a volley from Chris Kane.

Montrose took the lead in 23 minutes. Andy Steeves did superbly on the left and his pass was fired home by Masson.

Queens sent on striker Lyndon Dykes at the break and in 54 minutes his shot forced a great save from Fleming.

The Championship side forced extratime in 87 minutes when Stephen Dobbie lashed home from 20 yards.

Four minutes into extra-time, Fleming somehow denied Connor Murray from close range.

Montrose almost regained the lead a minute from the break when Graham Webster hit the bar.

Five minutes from time, a long ball released Dykes and he ran in to score.

A minute into added time, Dobbie chased the ball to the line and somehow scored from a near impossible angle to complete the scoring.

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie said: “That was outstanding from my players.”
