Warrior Frank continues to inspire

The one show (bbc1, weeknighTs, 7pm)

Often the butt of jokes for trying to be everything to everyone, it was only two weeks ago that guest Mel Brooks remarked on air that The One Show was “nuts”.

Making Hollywood A-listers sit through video packages about dry rot or whatever the issue of the day might be is, admittedly, a bit out there.

But the programme also deserves credit for the stories they tackle and their piece on British boxing legend Frank Bruno and his ultimate fight – dealing with mental illness – was a great segment on Tuesday’s show.

A cynic would say he was only promoting his latest book, but he spoke so openly and powerfully about what he had been through that it could only have inspired and helped on what was World Mental Health Day.

Frank and his friends spoke about him being sectioned three times over the last 14 years and the former world heavyweight champion’s fight back to good health.

He’s now a mental health ambassador and has set up the Frank Bruno Foundation to inspire positive mental health through exercise.

After fighting pugilists like Mike Tyson and Oliver McCall during his career, Frank would never have thought his biggest battle would take place outside the ring.

But in coming out the other side and speaking so openly, his experiences and profile will help many others who are experiencing their own mental health issues.

dice (sky aTlanTic, sunday, 11.10pm)

Stand-up comic Andrew Dice Clay sold out arenas throughout America in the late ’80s.

Although his fame didn’t transfer over here, it doesn’t make this comedy starring Dice as an older, less successful, version of himself any less funny.
