Get crafty this Christmas

-

Do you fancy getting creative this Christmas?

Then a trip to The Stitching, Sewing & Hobbycrafts Show is a must.

The co-hosted shows are back at Glasgow’s SEC on October 26 to 29, bringing together more than 150 exhibitors showcasing artisan, handcrafted gifts, supplies and festive inspiration for crafters.

We asked the organisers to share their tips for getting creative this Christmas.

1. Get Organised. Sit down with a cup of tea and write out your gift list.

Don’t stress about finding the perfect present – often something quirky, unexpected or homemade can bring the most pleasure, for the maker as well as those receiving the gift.

2. Be Unique. It’s easy to leave it to the last minute and panic buy gifts on the high street, however, almost everyone loves a unique gift.

Buy one-off items from local designer-makers (or come to the SEC and meet them).

3. Make your own gifts. Learn how to make personalised items such as keyrings, jewellery and even an infinity scarf with your arms (no needles required) at the SEC. 4. Lighten up. Add some sparkle to your home with some clever lighting.

Don’t just have fairylights on your Christmas tree – add them to your mantelpiece, the top of a shelf or wrap them around your stair banisters to create a festive glow that will flow from room to room.

5. Involve the Kids. Make home-made decorations and cards.

All you need is some card, glue and glitter, last year’s cards and lots of patience!

6. Wrap It. Create beautifully-wrapped gifts using coloured ribbon.

You can learn the Art of Japanese Gift Wrapping at the SEC.

7. Cards Galore. Display your cards creatively and don’t just stick to the lounge.

Tack up some satin ribbon to hang your cards in your bedroom, use sparkly fridge magnets to display some cards in the kitchen or use colourful clothes pegs to attach your cards to string in the hallway.

8. Dine in style. Create a sparkly, pretty table for the Christmas meal. Ideally set the table the day before so you have plenty of time and can enjoy it.
