Morecambe gave themselves a huge boost by leaving Chesterfield stranded at the bottom of the Football League as they won 2-0 at the Proact Stadium.

Adam McGurk and Garry Thompson scored in each half to hand Jim Bentley’s side a crucial three points.

Shrimps goalkeeper Barry Roche denied the home side with a double save from Kristian Dennis and Chris O’Grady, before McGurk fired Morecambe ahead with a 20-yard free-kick.

Chesterfield were devoid of inspiration until the 42nd minute when Robbie Weir surged forward and beat Roche with a 20-yard shot that bounced off the crossbar.

But Morecambe scored again in the 47th minute when Thompson was left unmarked at the back post to head in. Roche then saved from Kristian Dennis and Joe Rowley to preserve their lead.

A Sean McConville goal sent Accrington up to fourth as they enjoyed a 1-0 win over promotion rivals Coventry.

Winger McConville fired home his third goal of the season after 14 minutes, while Stanley also hit the bar twice through Sean McConville and Billy Kee.

Jamie Devitt came off the bench to score a fine winner as Carlisle chalked up a fourth away league victory of the season after winning 1-0 at Colchester.

Luke Berry scored a hat-trick as Luton thrashed Stevenage 7-1, with Danny Hylton also grabbing a brace.

Notts County returned to the top of the table following a 2-1 victory over Barnet, thanks to goals from Shola Ameobi and Ryan Yates.

Mansfield lost 3-1 at home to Swindon, while Lincoln were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Cambridge.
