Clever conversion is cream of the crop

Former granary is a beautiful home in delightful surroundings

LOCATED in the heart of East Lothian farmland, this beautiful home is a thoughtfully converted 19th Century granary.

Chesterhall Steading, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Longniddry, is an easy commute to Edinburgh.

Covering 2920sq ft across two levels, it offers stunning gardens and patios for a relaxing family home.

Angela Fotheringham and her husband Bill bought the property in 1995.

“We loved the location,” Angela said. “At the time I worked in Edinburgh and could get there quickly from home.

“The house is part of a steading and each side was converted into separate houses, which don’t overlook each other.

“Including the cottage and main house, there are only seven properties on the enclave.”

Approached from a treelined country lane, the property boasts a number of enticing features.

The spacious lounge houses a wood-burning fire and has views out to the grounds from arched stone windows, making it a perfect place to relax.

The kitchen’s southward-facing panoramic windows flood the room with natural light and the room has a terracotta tiled floor.

“It makes cleaning easy if there are kids and a husband regularly dirtying the floor,” laughed Angela.

“We have five bedrooms, six if you include the downstairs room we use as an office.

“One of my favourite features is the master bedroom suite we made.

“We converted three rooms into one bedroom, dressing room and wet room, which looks out over the Firth of Forth. I had visualised it for years and I’m so happy with the result.

“Everyone who sees it takes a sharp breath – it really has the wow factor.”

The property also features solar panels, double glazing and LPG central heating system, while the conservatory opens out on to a secluded courtyard that is often bathed in sunlight.

The time has come for Angela and Bill to move on – but leaving this much-loved home behind won’t be easy.

“My husband is 80 and I’m 70, so sooner or later we had to think about all the bedrooms gathering dust,” she explained.

“Four of the bedrooms are used about once a year, which is crazy, and eventually we will also have to get a gardener in to tend to things.

“We have four grandsons who used to play in the garden and build gang huts in the fields, but now they’re older and into women we don’t see so much of them!

“Bill and I won’t move too far though, as we have so many good friends in the area.

“It’s going to be so hard to give this place up as we’ve enjoyed lots of great times here.”

The property is for sale through Gilson Gray, offers over £575,000.
