Tyrrell showing shades of idol Monty

- BERNARD GALLACHER

Tyrrell Hatton is the man-of-the-moment on the European Tour after successive victories in the last two weeks.

Retaining his Dunhill Links title at St Andrews and then winning the Italian Open has rocketed him up the Race To Dubai list and put him in pole position for a Ryder Cup debut.

Tyrrell started the year really well in America, but he lost his form completely during the summer and missed the cut in all four Majors.

That was poor for a player of his ability. But he’s bounced back in glorious style.

I like him and I enjoy watching him on television.

He can be petulant at times but I don’t really have a problem with that. Trust me, most other pros won’t be upset by it, either.

I think he almost needs that anger inside him to fuel his game. That’s his nature and it is best if he stays like that.

About 12 months ago, everyone was saying that Justin Thomas needed to change and calm down on the course.

Now he’s the PGA Champion – and the FedEx Cup Champion – after a sensational year in which he won five times. No one is questioning his personality.

The good thing for Tyrrell is that by having his father, Jeff, as his coach, there has been no desire to change his swing when he has not played as well.

Nor is he an advocate of overpractising. That is quite refreshing in the modern age when there is a tendency to bash balls on the range for hours.

The Hattons idolised Colin Montgomerie, and it’s not hard to see that in their approach to practice and attitude on the course. It has not served Monty too badly down the years!

That fiery streak also reminds me a bit of Thomas Bjorn and the Ryder Cup captain will have been delighted to watch Tyrrell over this last fortnight.

You want winners in your team and Hatton has proved that. I’m sure he would be a great addition to the European side.

The remarkable thing is that Ross Fisher has finished as runner-up to his fellow Englishman in each event. He was even second when Tyrrell won at St Andrews last year!

I’ve known Ross since he was 12, when I brought him in as one of the first intake of juniors to receive a Wentworth scholarship.

I can’t claim any credit in his development, but it is nice to see him at the top of the game. I was struck by how enthusiastic he was about the game at a young age and that appealed to me.

We talked about his incredible record 61 at St Andrews last week and he backed that up with a brilliant final round 63 to claim second in Italy.

That has taken his game to a new level and he should be aiming for a Ryder Cup spot in France next year.

He played in Monty’s winning team at Celtic Manor in 2010 however, he’s far too good a player to only appear once.

But, for both he and Hatton, the big-money events over the next four weeks give them a real chance to carry on their great form. If they do that, they can still chase down the Race to Dubai leader Tommy Fleetwood.
