I’m lost in the plot with hunky Kit

- LAURA

GUNPOWDER (BBC1, SAT)

The big budget retelling of the 1605 plot to blow up the House of Lords got off to an explosive start.

Last week’s brutal opener sparked plenty of complaints over the drama’s gruesome execution scenes.

Such horrific acts were common during the reign of James I. But I can see why watching a poor Jesuit priest hung, drawn and quartered barely an hour after watching Anton Du Beke spinning around the Strictly dance floor in a pink flamenco shirt and sequin trousers could be a tad jarring for some viewers.

But it’s still an entertaining watch. The tension, plotting and horror were ramped up as main man Robert Catesby headed to Spain to recruit allies, while the King’s network of spies began to close in on the Catholic conspirators.

Game Of Throne’s Kit Harrington is handsome and brooding as Catesby, the historical leader of the doomed plot more commonly associated with Guy Fawkes.

And it turns out, Harrington is actually a direct descendent of Catesby. You could argue it’s a role he was born to play.

Of course, we all know how the dastardly plot unfolds.

Let’s just hope the show ends on a metaphorical bang instead of fizzling out.

GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF (CHANNEL 4, TUE)

I was apprehensive when Bake Off moved to Channel 4. How could it be the same without Mary, Mel and Sue?

Luckily, C4 bosses were wise to stick like toffee to the beloved show’s format and I’ve been hooked every week.

Now the final three battle for the Bake Off crown – cue crying into batter, panic over pastry and more intense ovenwatching than you can shake a whisk at.

If the proof’s in the pudding, GBBO is definitely recipe for success – whatever channel it lands on.
