GOLF

Marc Leishman led the pack at the halfway stage of the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii as he followed Thursday’s 67 with a round of 69 on Friday.

The former PGA rookie of the year did not drop a shot in Kapalua and carded four birdies – two in the front nine and two on the back – to go 10-under for the tournament.

The 34-year-old Australian is tied for first place with American Brian Harman, who went round twice in 68 and holed a 78-foot chip for birdie on the par-5 15th.

Dustin Johnson, the current world No. 1, is in third after also going round in 68. A shaky start with dropped shots on the 3rd and 4th was soon overcome, with seven birdies across the remaining 14 holes.

Americans Pat Perez and Chris Stroud and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas sit tied for fourth at eight-under.

World No. 2 Jordan Spieth moved up 17 places to tied13th with a round of 66, following up Thursday’s disappointing 75.

Kyle Smith were both clinging on by their fingernails following costly defeats at the Perth Masters yesterday.

The two met in a breakfast-time encounter, which Brewster won 7-1, leaving Smith needing to beat Czech Jiri Snitil to stay in the competition barely a month before he goes to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Brewster went on to lose 7-4 to Dutchman Jaap Van Dorp, and the Aberdeen veteran must now overcome Norway’s Magnus Ramsfjell to keep his hopes of a record fifth Masters title alive.

Fellow-Scot Cameron Bryce had a more-successful day, scoring back-to-back victories over Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller and Italian Joel Retornaz to stay on course for a place in today’s quarter-finals.

Swiss skip Peter De Cruz and pre-event favourite Niklas Edin are already there after winning yesterday’s A-road finals.

SQUASH

Edinburgh’s Georgia Adderley can still win a bronze medal at the British Junior Open in Birmingham despite losing out in yesterday’s Under-17 semi-finals.

Having battled through four rounds, Adderley’s run ended when she was beaten 11-3, 11-6, 11-4 by the topseeded American Marina Stefanoni.

However, victory today over Egypt’s Jana Shiha would be the perfect early present before she celebrates her 17th birthday tomorrow.
