Hoops keeper ‘could be out for some time’

Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon will discover today just how serious the new injury to his left knee is.

The 35- year- old spent nearly two years out of the game with a torn patella tendon on the joint and at one point feared he would never play again.

This is believed to be a different problem, specifically a twisted medial ligament, but it remains a concern for himself and his club.

“Both players are struggling,” said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers when asked for updates on the condition of Gordon and Leigh Griffiths, who was also injured in yesterday’s win over Hibs.

“With Leigh, it looks like his calf. He has had issues and problems with that. Craig’s looks a bit more serious in terms of his knee.

“I think he’s twisted his MCL (medial collateral ligament). We will have to see where he is with a scan so it looks like he could be out for a period of time.”

While Rodgers has cover for Griffiths, who is now a doubt for the Europa League ties against Zenit St Petersburg next month, the issue with Gordon is serious enough to have the Hoops boss admitting he may need to bring in a new keeper this week.

“In terms of the window we certainly might need to look at the goalkeeping situation now,” he said.

“We sent young Connor Hazard out on loan to Falkirk, funnily enough, because he needed some experience.

“I think he can be a very good keeper for us in the future but he needs to get the games. So that is a problem area that we might need to look at for sure.”

Celtic, meanwhile, are close to finalising an 18- month loan deal for Chelsea starlet Charly Musonda Jnr who is expected in Glasgow in the next couple of days.

They are also understood to be considering going back in with an improved bid for Dundee defender Jack Hendry, having had an initial offer of £500,000 rejected.

“They are both talented players but are both still at their respective clubs,” said Rodgers.

“We will see over the next couple of days and hopefully we can confirm one or two signings which will be a great lift for the squad.”
