Gloves are off as Wright rants at poor Saints

- By Mark Guidi sport@sundaypost.com

Tommy Wright is set to wield the axe for tomorrow night for his side’s Scottish Cup tie away to Albion Rovers.

After watching his team lose 3-1 to Partick Thistle, the seething St Johnstone boss has lost patience with several of his players and they will be left out.

He also hopes to add to his squad and wants to see the options he has in the transfer market come to fruition before the window closes on Wednesday night. It will be up to the Saints board to deliver.

Wright said: “I’ve probably been too loyal for too long to too many players.

“It’s time for me to take the gloves off now and make changes.

“We keep making the same mistakes and our decision-making is poor.

“It’s just not good enough. It’s been the same for too long.

“I had a rant at the players at halftime but didn’t even go into the dressing room at full-time. I thought it was best I stayed away. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever done that.

“But they will get the message when the team-sheet goes up for the Albion Rovers game.

“It’s important I see a positive response because we want to do well in the Cup.

“We also need to add to the squad. We have options. But we don’t have long to go. The next few days will tell a tale.”

Jags boss Alan Archibald was delighted with the way his team performed and to get a first away victory in the league for 10 months.

He said: “We won last week away to Queen of the South in the Scottish Cup but it was good to win in the league.

“It had been going on for too long. So this was a great result in what is a really difficult venue to win at.

“We had a good team performance. Ryan Edwards was great when he came on.

“Conor Sammon scored another goal and Miles Storey was first-class on the left-hand side.

“We have a few players back and we have a really strong squad now. It showed in the lads we had on the bench and the one or two I had to leave sitting in the stand.

“We now need to build on this result.”
