Nick knows just how to make us D.I. Cry

-

DIY SOS (bbc1)

This series, fronted by Nick Knowles, regularly makes viewers shed a tear or two at the end of the programme.

That’s when the family whose home has been given a major overhaul by Nick and his team, and dozens of local volunteers, meet each other.

The families chosen are always well-deserved, living in particularly testing circumstances.

This week’s big reveal didn’t make me shed a tear or two – it was more like a whole river.

The team were helping PC Kris Aves, who was seriously injured in last year’s Westminster terror attack.

Kris was left wheelchairbound after suffering numerous head injuries, a damaged shoulder, spinal cord and sternum, two broken legs and other injuries.

As a result, he had been unable to get around his home in Barnet and had been living in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, in Aylesbury.

The DIY SOS team and the amazing local volunteers transformed the house in just nine days. They even installed a lift.

Kris was overcome. “What you guys have done in this house has made me able to come home to my family,” he told the team.

Cue millions of viewers blubbing in front of their televisions. My husband denied he was crying but got something in his eye just around that moment.

People commented on social media that it shouldn’t have been up to a TV show to sort out PC Aves’ house.

I’m just glad someone did.

SAVE ME (SKY ATLANTIc)

Save me is from the same people who brought us the fabulous Line Of Duty.

Starring Suranne Jones and Lennie James, it’s shaping up to be another winner.

Just don’t take your eyes off it for a minute or you won’t have a clue what’s going on.
