Well boss can’t blame fans for leaving early

- By Brian Fowlie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Furious Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson admitted he felt like leaving the Lanarkshire derby early.

The Northern Irishman, unlike many fans, had to stay to the end of the 2- 0 defeat at Hamilton Accies.

He felt his players let down their 1700 sodden supporters.

“It was especially disappointing for the number of fans that turned up in the pouring rain,” he said.

“I think three- quarters of them left before the end – and I wanted to join them, to be honest.

“But that’s not the team we have come to know and not the team the fans have come to know.

“We will have them back on Tuesday morning remembering what has got us our relative success this season.”

Robinson agreed that his team didn’t show their usual vigour.

He went on: “They have been well reminded after the game, I can assure you of that.

“We are a team that wins second balls and plays on the front foot.

“When you think you are better than what you are, football has a funny way of kicking you in the teeth, and that’s what happened.

“We were chasing the game right from the start.

“We gave away a sloppy goal from a set-play that we warned them about.

“Their delivery from set plays all day was better than ours. I don’t think we made their keeper make a save until the 93rd minute, which probably summed up our threat in the final third.

“I tried to make positive changes to try to change the game but it didn’t work, and I just felt we looked like a team that has had a lot of plaudits and didn’t do the basic things well.”

The defeat is a big blow to Motherwell’s hopes of a top-six finish, but Robinson looks at the league position in a different way.

He said “First and foremost we have to stay in this division, so it was a big three points missed.

“The result on Friday night where Hearts lost was the motivation I thought we needed.

“It didn’t look like it at times, I thought Hamilton competed better than us, which is very unlike the players.”
