Sturrock boost for United striker Scott

- By Sean Hamilton SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Scott McDonald last night hailed Paul Sturrock for giving him a “kick up the backside” ahead of Dundee United’s clash with Dunfermline.

A fortuitous McDonald strike earned battling United a share of the spoils against the Pars.

And the experienced front man revealed a pre-game chat with Sturrock – who has been drafted in to assist Tangerines gaffer Csaba Laszlo – provided the inspiration for his performance.

“He was great,” he revealed after the game.

“He came in this morning, saw the boys and gave us some information,” said McDonald.

“He is a well- respected and highlyregarded man. To have him here is a good thing.

“I had a chat with him this morning in terms of what is required of me in terms of leadership.

“You might know it already but when someone like that tells you it’s a kick up the backside.”

McDonald’s manager, who was pleased with his players’ efforts, if not the result, against the Pars, was, meanwhile, at pains to point out that Sturrock’s role remains advisory.

Asked whether the United legend had played a big role in preparing for the match, the Hungarian said: “Look, I am the manager.

“At the moment, Paul Sturrock is a scout for the club and Paul Sturrock is a friend for me, and also Paul Sturrock is someone who understands football.

“We work together, but we don’t work today together.

“The person who has responsibility to put the team together and to train the team is Csaba Laszlo.

“Paul was a manager for a long time and he has an illness that makes his life not so easy, but we accept his help.

“He offered me Mohsni, he helped me to bring Anthony Ralston.

“In two weeks that is two players – that is fantastic.

“If it is possible, I want to bring three more people on my staff. At the moment there is not the possibility there.

“But I am not scared about somebody coming in. I am pleased to bring people in.”
