DIRLETON CASTLE

DIRLETON, EAST LOTHIAN

- Dirleton Castle And Gardens, North Berwick, East Lothian EH39 5ER 01620 850330

Not many of our gardens can say they are record-breaking, but Dirleton enjoys that claim to fame.

Its herbaceous border has been authenticated by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest.

When it’s in full bloom during the summer, it’s quite a sight. There’s also a Victorian garden. It might not have made it into the Guinness Book of Records but we found it equally impressive.

If it’s a windy day, it’s a great place to find a bit of shelter as you explore. The high walls do a great job at protecting you from the breezes.

The gardens themselves have lots to interest. There are more formal sections, but also wooded and grassy areas which are very inviting for picnics.

The castle itself is a ruin. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth exploring.

It’s like a maze and the view from the tower along the coast and out towards the sea is dramatic and impressive.

Don’t miss the dovecot, either – lots of visitors say this is one of the most interesting aspects of a visit to Dirleton. It housed 2000 birds in its time and is quite a size.

For us, though, it’s those wonderful gardens every time.

After your visit, you can make your way to Castle Inn. It sits in the shadow of the castle, overlooks Dirleton village green and is a great place for a bite to eat.

So many people pass Dirleton by on their way to North Berwick –but it’s got plenty to offer.
