LEAGUE 1 ROUND-UP

-

Fleetwood picked up their first home win since October as they slayed fellow strugglers Northampton 2-0 at Highbury.

On paper, the odds were stacked against John Sheridan’s side given the Cobblers’ unbeaten spree on the road in 2018 added to the fact that Fleetwood’s last home victory came via of a 2-0 success over Oxford on October 28.

But a Kyle Dempsey strike – his first of the season – and Cian Bolger’s close-range effort late on saw Sheridan make it five unbeaten with back-toback wins now moving Fleetwood five points clear of the drop with eight games to go.

Wigan won 2-0 at rockbottom Bury to move back into the automatic promotion places.

Nick Powell scored his 13th goal of the season after 26 minutes, before Chey Dunkley doubled Latics’ lead in the 50th minute. And Wigan comfortably saw out their third straight victory, leaving Bury 10 points from safety with eight games left.

Blackpool earned their first-ever point at MK Dons, with the 0-0 stalemate leaving their hosts entrenched in the relegation zone.

It was also the first draw between the two sides in eight encounters, although the Tangerines nearly went home with all three points, when Sean Longstaff’s effort smacked against the crossbar at the death.

Blackburn, without a game, dropped to third, with Shrewsbury returning to the summit after Stefan Payne’s goal downed AFC Wimbledon in a 1-0 win.

Dominic Poleon’s winner re-ignited Bradford’s play-off push as they beat Gillingham 1-0, but Rotherham’s automatic hopes all but ended with a 2-0 defeat at Southend.
