Last Chance Saloon for Pena in Mexico

- By Mark Walker sport@sundaypost.com

Carlos Pena will be heading back to Rangers at the end of his loan unless he vastly improves, admits former Ibrox boss Pedro Caixinha.

The Mexican international midfielder returned to his homeland in January after Caixinha snapped him up again on loan for Cruz Azul.

But his time at the Mexico City club has been a disaster.

He was booed by his own fans, suffered an ankle injury that kept him out for two months and was then subbed at half- time in their derby defeat last week against Club America.

Pena is the second- highest- paid player in the country and has been severely criticised since he returned to Mexico, following after his disappointing spell at Rangers.

And it seems even Caixinha, a huge failure himself in the Ibrox hot-seat, has now lost patience with the 28-year-old.

He has warned Pena he will be sent back to Glasgow unless his form picks up

Caixinha said: “Carlos Pena owes me more than I owe him.

“There has to be a strong relationship between us that has trust and honesty.

“And Carlos knows that I am not getting as much back from him as I have given to him.

“He has a one-year loan and will stay with us until the end of that because that is part of the agreement.

“But the next part of the season will decide whether he stays with us after that.

“If not, when the loan ends, he will go back to Rangers. It’s up to him.”

Pena is contracted with the Ibrox side until 2020, but Rangers would dearly love him to get him off their books permanently.
