Rosler: City fans must copy the Kop’s passion

Uwe Rosler has urged Manchester City’s fans to create the same kind of white- hot cauldron they faced in Liverpool to help their team overturn the three-goal deficit in Tuesday’s second leg.

The former City striker witnessed his old side being swept away on one of those special European nights that Anfield is famous for.

The German viewed the contribution of the partisan home crowd as a key factor in Jurgen Klopp’s team being able to establish such a commanding lead in the Champions League quarter-final tie.

But Rosler believes if any team can overturn the 3-0 scoreline, it’s Pep Guardiola’s side.

“The atmosphere inside Anfield was explosive. That obviously helped Liverpool’s players to find new levels of energy, especially in the second half when they were under more pressure,” says Rosler.

“I was very surprised by what it was like in the stadium. It was unbelievable. Just like the old days.

“It made Anfield a special place on the night and gave the Liverpool players a massive lift.

“When you play such a highintensity pressing game like Liverpool do, to deny the opposition the time to get on the ball you need an extra 5-10%.

“I think their supporters helped the players get that in the first leg.

“The way Liverpool hassled and pressed us we didn’t get our normal time to have the possession we usually have to control the game.

“What happened was very hard to take but the way we’ve played this season I wouldn’t be surprised if we can come back even from a result like that. It will be very difficult, of course. Liverpool are now in the driving seat.

“But I have so much belief in the players – and the coach – that I believe it’s possible.

“It will be a night for big hearts, but I have no doubts about City’s players.

“Remember that Barcelona came back against PSG last year after being 4-0 down. I think City can do something similar.

“But to do it we need an unbelievable evening and everything has to go our way. The supporters have to play a massive part.”
